Reflecting on our Summer Interns, Blog Post

Our summer internship program continued this summer, from May 13 - August 16, with two engineering interns from North Dakota State University, Logan and Grace. When hiring an engineering intern, we look for someone who is willing to do the hands-on work required of an engineer, good communication skills, and a willingness to talk with all stakeholders of a project. Other traits we look for in an intern are someone who is self-motivated, willing to try new things, and is interested in helping our company, just as much as we are helping them with their internship experience.

The benefits of internships for Continental are numerous. Here are a few:

  • Helps give future engineers real-world experience
  • Bridges the gap between what is learned in the classroom and how it is applied in the workplace
  • Gives a fresh set of eyes to current opportunities in the facility
  • For the intern, he or she can build connections with our employees which can help them in the future

Our interns are an integral part of our operation for the summer, and we are always grateful for the work they do. We got to look back on Logan and Grace’s internships from their supervisors, Travis Mackey and Craig Zirnhelt:

Logan

Logan was our Manufacturing Engineer Intern. His main responsibilities were to redesign current production tools, redesign the work center computer stand layout, design a new core system, inventory our production tooling and help design a new belt to trial. Logan grew professionally and learned how to design with all stakeholders in mind. Thanks, Logan!

Grace

Grace was our Quality Engineering Intern. Her responsibilities were maintaining the calibration of calibrated tools, conducting quality audits, designing and implementing quality check tools, product testing and various other quality projects. During her time, Grace grew into someone who was open and involved. She could work with anyone, from the leadership team to professional staff and hourly workers, to customers and vendors. She made the best of the opportunities she had and was extremely successful during her internship at Continental. Thanks, Grace!
